Specifies core safety features required by operators on new mobile plant purchasers
The voluntary ‘safer by design’ code recommends core safety features for an operator to specify on new mobile plant purchasers. The code covers five main types of mobile plant: loaders, excavators, bulldozers, dumptrucks, mobile crushers and screens. The code looks at five different aspects of safety for each machine type: access and egress, visibility, safety and security, maintenance, environment and health. In some cases features have been identified as ‘aspirational’ where it is recognised that manufacturers are currently not able to meet this requirement.

Summarises current best practice in mobile plant safety devices
The code has been developed in consultation with a wide range of quarry operators and manufacturers. The core safety features when combined with some of the additional optional items detailed in the code reflect current best practice within the industry.

Helps to eliminate injuries and ill-health due to poor mobile plant design
Research has shown that even though meeting international safety standards and the requirements of the EU Machinery Directive, a significant proportion of incidents involving mobile plant on mineral producing and processing sites are due to poor design. The safety features outlined in the voluntary code will help to ensure improvements in areas such as access and egress from machines and make a significant contribution in helping the industry achieve target zero.

Enables operators to evaluate existing and new mobile plant against the guidance
Operators can evaluate either their existing mobile fleet or new machines against the code by selecting the relevant type of machine and downloading a checklist. This can then be used to conduct a quick review to determine how closely the machine matches the core safety features recommended in the code.

Provides a comparative index of mobile plant by manufacturer
The website incorporates a machine index that identifies the different machine types supplied by manufacturers. It enables users to identify the equivalent models supplied by the different manufacturers.
Manufacturers can use to obtain guidance on customer's criteria for safety devices
The ‘safer by design’ code recommendations have been developed following a lengthy period of consultation across the quarrying industry and with manufacturers. It represents a consensus view of what quarry operators require as warranted safety features on the mobile plant they purchase. |
