Retractable bay covers Plymouth Concrete Plant - Topic 3
ARTICLE

FINALIST - TOPIC 3

Heidelberg Materials’ Plymouth plant had a contract to supply nuclear grade concrete, the guidelines for the contract that specified that all aggregates for production must be kept covered to stop contamination.

The site has limited space for storage and truck movements, and with the potential of 30 tipper deliveries a day, the safe management of the operation was a primary consideration. It was agreed that due to the space constraints of the site, the construction of traditional, static roofs storage bays would not be an option. The space taken up by this type of construction would increase the risk of a collision with a delivery vehicle to an unacceptable level.

To address these safety concerns and meet its customer's requirements, the site embarked on a collaborative journey with hauliers, engineering, and specialised roof manufacturers.

The result was an innovative solution featuring retractable roofs for our bays. This design eliminates the risk of collisions between vehicles and structures taking away the possibility of the tipper body colliding with a static roof and tipping over if not centred. The retractable roof design allows for seamless clearance of tipper trucks and Front-End Loaders (FEL) during operations, ensuring a safe material handling process.

Integrated three control points for each bay were also introduced. This comprehensive control system includes access points in the batching office, at each bay, and a key fob system for FEL operators. With these controls in place, operators on-site have full oversight of roof operations from any location within the yard, optimising its operations while minimising risk.
