Further investigation showed that the bearing on one side had failed at some point in time and the inner race had continued to wear through the cast iron housing until it could no longer restrain the drum and the load that was being imposed on it. The bearing housing had fractured into 3 pieces. The drum would have shot forward pulling it out of the remaining housing and then down onto the floor.
