While in many ways an asset to the quarrying industry, the advent of truck pumped emulsified explosives also brought its share of problems. In the past, when an overfilled borehole or a misfire required the removal of emulsion, methods resulted in blocked holes and stones that became dislodged during extraction from the drill hole.
A member of staff at Blastright Tools in Colwyn Bay has designed a safer and cleaner solution – a pumped emulsion extractor. Product enters a hollow aluminium alloy tube fitted with a short threaded aluminium bar at the top. A one-way flap valve at the bottom then expels any water from the open top. When the tool is removed from the hole, the weight of the emulsion closes the flap, thus retaining the emulsion in the tube, allowing it to be extracted.
