Stop work authority policy and stop work authority card

FINALIST

EPC-UK is a drilling & blasting and commercial explosives specialist that operates within quarrying, logistical and manufacturing environments. Highly trained employees work with hazardous materials and machinery as part of their roles whilst working on ECP  or  customers’ sites, and whilst in transit.

Committed to achieving Zero Harm, the safety of its employees, customers and surrounding environment is constantly prioritised by ECP.

To limit the risk of an incident, and as part of its ongoing drive to support its safety standards and procedures, EPC-UK created the STOP WORK AUTHORITY CARD. This equipped employees with the confidence to speak out about any unsafe act or condition in any working environment without pressure or reprisal. The STOP WORK AUTHORITY POLICY and supporting STOP WORK AUTHORITY CARD concepts were introduced in 2017.

ECP appreciated that not everyone feels self-assured enough to speak out about witnessing or performing a working operation that may present safety concerns. The written policy stated on the card, provides instant permission together with guaranteed backing and support of ECP’s Managing Director. Any employee should feel confident to do what they feel is right regarding ‘stopping work’ due to safety concerns.

Simple and effective, the POLICY and CARD result in a trust-based mechanism that anyone can use. It works because of the support of the leadership and avoidance of any ‘blame game’, the card’s presence backing any individual up, providing confidence and, vitally, a route to remaining safe at all times
