Incident alert

A driver slipped whilst jumping over a puddle in wet ground conditions and sustained a calf injury resulting in a 7 day LTI - Slip, Trips and Falls

What Happened

A HGV driver exited the tipper vehicle on a customer site in order to view the access to a tipping location. The weather had been extremely wet, the ground was unmade and the conditions underfoot were boggy, with puddles of water.

On his return to the vehicle the driver jumped a puddle and landed in a way that caused him to slip and tear a calf muscle. The driver had suitable and sufficient PPE footwear on.

Further considerations in relation to this incident.

  1. Review risk assessments for managing inclement weather onsite, it may be necessary to make and communicate changes onsite to accommodate conditions.
  2. HGV drivers encouraged NOT to exit vehicles onsite, only when necessary.  Dynamically risk assess, ground conditions, the weather and local environment, take appropriate measures, use walkways and act accordingly to avoid injury.

The MPA Drivers Handbook provides a useful summary and guidance on what drivers should do at customer's and other sites.  SEE MPA DRIVERS HANDBOOK
