TITLE
Bungee snap
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

WHAT HAPPENED

An incident occurred at Victoria Deep Premix recently, when a contractor called to collect some admixture tanks. As he was adjusting equipment in the back of his van, a bungee rope that was attached to the side had caught on a small, but he had not noticed. He found it difficult to move the generator as the bungee was stretched.

As he looked down to ascertain the problem, the rope detached itself and flew up with the hook striking his left eye. He may loose the sight in this eye and is awaiting the swelling to reduce before the surgeon can confirm this.

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN

This accident highlights the following issues:

These bungee ropes are inherently dangerous, as you rarely know when they are about to snap.

The hook can weaken and give way without warning.

The elasticity of these ropes produces a tremendous amount of stored energy.

Their velocity when released can induce serious injury if the metal hook strikes unprotected eyes, faces or exposed skin.
