TITLE
Operator narrowly avoids injury when overhead conveyor fails. Please watch video.
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

WHAT HAPPENED

Whilst a concrete operative was washing down the yard area underneath a radial conveyor, a joint on the conveyor failed causing the belt and material going up to the overhead bins to fall to the floor, narrowly missing the operative. The area was cordoned off and the radial conveyor was isolated awaiting a contractor to come in the following day to make a repair to the joint.

Please watch the video which shows how the operator narrowly avoids injury when the belt falls - please go to the video section of Safequarry

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN

To ensure this doesn’t happen again the radial conveyor has been fitted with a large mesh cage which will prevent the belt from falling whilst still allowing material to drop through and not hinder the normal running of the belt.

Operators are recommended to consider in risk assessments what would happen if an overhead conveyor belt failed in an area above which employees or customers might be present or mobile plant operating.
