TITLE
Operator using stone cropper broke and lacerated his finger
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

WHAT HAPPENED

The injured party (IP), cut and broke a finger while operating a walling cropper. The incident was caused by the IP pulling and maneuvering a stone into the split zone, unfortunately he had not noticed that there was a stone overhanging on a stone that was behind the selected stone. When the selected stone was moved the stone that was balanced behind fell onto the IPs finger cutting it and breaking it. As a result of his injuries, it is estimated that he will be off work for 2 weeks.

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN

Preventative Actions:

  • Ensure all selected waste stone is single layered to prevent any stones falling
  • Ensure all cropper operators are authorised and trained to a competent level to ensure familiarity with the dangers of the cropper operation.

Risk-changers:

  • Reviewing the use of an adjustable ‘letter box’, for the stone to pass through. This will ensure that all the stone being pulled to the crop is at a single layer.
