TITLE
Artificial Intelligence Cameras, as a Driver Safety Aid.
ARTICLE

Hargreaves Logistics is one of the UK’s largest bulk hauliers (Large Goods Vehicles / LGVs), operating 24 hours per day, seven days a week, from several strategic locations throughout the UK.  Using our extensive fleet of dedicated vehicles, Hargreaves delivers over four million tonnes of dry bulk product into some of the UK’s most critical businesses and infrastructure.

Issues were Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs), specifically rear end shunts involving third party vehicles, on the public highway (see supporting Video – 1).

The SHE manager, working closely with the leadership and management team, looked closely at and tasked ourselves on improving our SHE performance, specifically RTAs, and particularly rear end shunts.

We looked closely at drivers behaviour over and above their knowledge, ability, training, and experience.  We found and believe human error and/or “failing to pay due care and attention” was not a good enough finding (root cause) in incident investigations and looked at how we could improve / aid drivers behaviour.

We discovered the Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras.  After a successful trial (see supporting Video – 2), we have committed to fitting the AI cameras to our fleet as standard going forward.

To date, none of our eleven vehicles fitted with the AI cameras have been involved in a RTA and most importantly what we set out to achieve, a rear end shunt. We believe that the addition of the AI camera to our current 360 degree camera set up, will aid the driver as a preventive proactive measure, for sure, mitigating one of “The Fatal 6” – Road Traffic Accidents and ideally eliminate any further RTAs / rear end shunts.
