Drivers falling whilst exiting or entering their cabs
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

WHAT HAPPENED

There have been two recent incidents where drivers have been injured when either entering or exiting lorry cabs.

1. A driver fell while exiting a cab resulting in bruising to their hip and ribs. The injuries have resulted in over 4 weeks lost time.

2. Another driver managed to prevent a fall by holding the handrails when they slipped whilst getting into a cab. They injured their shoulder resulting in 5 lost days

LEARNING POINTS / ACTIONS TAKEN

Drivers are reminded of these simple checks that will help to prevent this type of incident

  • Exit the vehicle backwards
  • Ensure that footplates are not warn or damaged
  • Ensure the soles of footwear are not covered in mud
  • Ensure the area inside the cab around the doorway is clear of any obstructions
  • Be aware of any debris or potholes in the ground you are about to exit onto

(Safequarry editor’s note: although not a factor in these incidents, wear to soles of boots have contributed to a number of driver falls. PPE should be subject to routine inspection and replaced when necessary – Drivers should be encouraged to report damage/wear etc)
